SANKT  PETRI  KYRKA  ANALYSIS

MATERIALITY ANALYSIS OF SIGURD LEWERENTZ 2022

KLIPPAN, SWEDEN | 56.1330º N, 13.1421º E

Designed between 1962-66, Sankt Petri Kyrka is the embodiment of respect for material. The Lutheran Church is a rock of darkened brick created at a time of post-industrial rootlessness. It is a stunning and emotive return to the basics. This work of early modernism was about the craft and the tactility of structure, raw simplicity related to place but also programme. The experience of the space is directly related to the early days of Christianity, worship in low-light catacombs, more connected with and focused on unrewarded piety.

This study looks at this building as an ode to brick and seeks to analyze the impact of dedication to material on the overall experience.
