COMMUNITY MUSIC WORKS
Community Music Works (CMW) is an orchestral afterschool program located in Providence, RI that creates urban community through music education. This project imagines a Brooklyn location for CMW between The Walt Whitman Public Library and PS 67 south of Fort Greene Park. Seated on a small, currently unoccupied site, the building looks to acknowledge its neighbors on all sides in line with CMW’s larger mission. Special attention has been paid to the views from surrounding buildings and the experience of accessing the building both by the children that are there daily and the community that is invited for monthly performances.
The proposed building consists of a series of volumes, positioned to align the program with the movement of the sun:
Individual practice rooms for younger students, face east to the sunrise as their time at CMW is just beginning. Individual practice rooms for older students, oriented west as they contemplate the end of their journey with the program. Space for group practice rests above with views in towards the center gathering space and out towards the city. The interstitial space is home to the core of the program, both indoor and outdoor performance that during a typical day serve as large collective gathering areas.
