CONSIDERED MAKING

Katharine Kim is an architect-to-be (lower case “a”) whose work is deeply tethered to the practice of paying attention. Katharine graduated from the dual-degree program at The New School with a BFA in Architectural Design from Parsons School of Design and a BA in Environmental Studies from Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts in 2024. Their complementary educations culminated in an undergraduate thesis that linked the two disciplines by examining possible multidisciplinary systems approaches to the architectural design process with the hope of generating work that is more in tune with the interconnected needs of social and environmental ecosystems.

Katharine’s architectural work aims to continue this pursuit, listening carefully to who and what is around, asking: can architecture be both beautiful and useful, in conversation with the community, ecology, climate, and ephemera that comprise the place it exists within?

These questions translate to practice through a rigorous commitment to studying place at a range of scales. Katharine utilizes both physical and digital tools to test and learn through making, keeping a hand-drafting and modeling practice alive as a method through which to gain tacit knowledge that allows for built-in moments of reflection while sharpening lead or making a jig.
