HOUSE OF TREE
REFORESTATION FOCUSED ART + SCIENCE RESIDENCY PROGRAM 2022
HOFN, ICELAND | 64.2497° N, 15.2020° W
This residency program seeks to generate deep engagement with the environment by reforesting Iceland beginning with just one slice of earth. Artists and scientists will come together for a period of two years and work collectively to gain tacit knowledge of Icelandís ecology. During this period, residents will continue their own practices informed by a new or changing relationship to the soil beneath their feet.
Once vastly forested, Iceland has been without trees since the land was razed shortly after settlement. Countering the effects of the changing climate, tree growth will prevent coastal erosion, sequester carbon, and prepare the soil for agricultural use as glacial rebound impacts the fishing industry.

PROCESS
This project is rooted in the earth in terms of both programme and design. When conceiving the primary building, we tried to listen to the site. Our intention was to be always in dialogue with the place. The wind and the sun begin to push back on form and orientation; the soil provides opportunity for insulation. The grasses bring texture and material to the project before anything is built. We frame the ephemeral qualities of the environment itself: the views of the sea and mountains, the sound of the rain on the roof, pockets with and without wind as we know that those things bring delight without design.
